James Hurley–Senior University Budget Director Jim came to us most recently from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where he served as Vice President for Budget and Planning. While at Northwestern he managed the annual planning and budget process of the university’s operating and capital budgets, including coordinating a network of 75+ budget managers, and was instrumental in negotiating funds flow and integration agreements between the University and its major clinical affiliate, Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, and establishing the University’s campus in Doha, Qatar. Prior to joining Northwestern Jim served in the same capacity at Brandeis University, was Associate Dean for Administration and Finance at New York University in New York City, and was Director of Financial Planning at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. Jim is a graduate of Bridgewater State University earning a Bachelor of Science Degree and has also done graduate coursework at Virginia Tech in the Master’s program in Urban and Regional Planning.
Paul Cochran – Director, Fletcher and Central portfolios Paul graduated from Suffolk University’s Executive MBA program through the Sawyer School of Management, concentrating in Finance. He spent 10 years working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. As the Director of FP&A, Paul and his team were responsible for the IT division operating budget and co-managing the Capital technology portfolio with the CTO. After that, Paul joined Sun Life Financial Individual Life Division as the Director of FP&A where he managed 22 product P&Ls and oversaw the integration of a comprehensive cost allocation tool. Finally, before joining us at Tufts, Paul worked for Cisco Systems managing the financials of the global video software solution portfolio of projects.
Chris Helmuth – Director, Friedman School of Nutrition and School of Medicine portfolios
Chris joined the Budget Center at Tufts in November 2015 after eleven years in finance and research administration at Harvard University. Most recently, Chris served as Director of Finance and Administration for the Department of Immunology & Infectious Diseases at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where he was responsible for planning and management of all financial and administrative activity within the department, including a large portfolio of both federal and non-federal sponsored awards.
Nina Miller-Browne – Director, Arts, Science & Engineering and SMFA Portfolios Nina came to Tufts in February 2017 from Northeastern University where, for the past six years, she has served as Associate Director of Financial Reporting and Analysis in the University’s Budget Office. Nina had responsibility for the development of Northeastern’s operating budget and forecasts and has built financial dashboards and provided on-going training to departments on financial reporting.Prior to joining Northeastern, Nina served as AVP, Finance Specialist at The State Street Corporation for three years, filled several senior analyst roles at Bank Of America/Fleet Bank, Boston, and was a Data Analyst at Putnam Investments.
Rock Rottler – Director, University Budget Rock has been with Tufts University for twenty years serving most of this period as a member of Finance, Planning and Analysis. He has fulfilled various roles from Sr. Financial Analyst to Associate Director and recently joined the Budget Center as University Budget Director in July of 2016. Prior to joining Tufts, Rock worked for a major defense contractor as a senior business administrator and received his MBA from Northeastern University.
Darren Swain – Assistant Director, School of Dental Medicine portfolio
Darren joined Tufts in May of 2013 as the Budget and Fiscal Officer for the School of Dental Medicine. Prior to Tufts, he spent 10 years at Raytheon Corporation supporting multiple product development teams, as well Finance and Planning. In addition he spent 3 years at Physical Optics Corporation, a privately owned, grant funded, research and development firm.
Elizabeth Torres – Director, Cummings, Tisch, and Operations portfolios
Elizabeth has been at Tufts for 15 years in the Dean’s Office at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine on the Grafton campus. Her most recent position there is as the Budget and Fiscal Officer. Elizabeth has an MBA from UMass. Prior to coming to Tufts, Elizabeth worked in the Pharmaceutical industry with a degree in Biology from MIT.
Sal Tripoli – Budget Systems Analyst
Sal joined Tufts in 2016 after working in a senior role for a Boston-based environmental startup as an analyst, project manager, and systems administrator. His experience includes database reporting and workflow development, high-level analytics, and data visualization. Previously he has filled various positions in technology, management consulting, and public outreach. He studied public policy and policy evaluation at Providence College and Northeastern University.
