Insurance & Risk Management
The Risk Management and Insurance Department works to minimize liability and the risk of loss, financial or otherwise, through the protection of University resources including employees, students, visitors, and property.
What is Risk Management?
Risk Management is the process of identifying and evaluating the risks associated with organizational operations, and then developing processes to control, reduce or eliminate those risks. Tufts University attempts to eliminate or control risks through hazard identification and correction, accident prevention, training, installation of life safety systems in buildings, fire protection systems, crime prevention, and other measures. On an individual level, risk management includes the effort of each employee to eliminate or reduce hazards in their work environment.
Types of Risk & Liability at Tufts
Premise — These are hazards associated with the buildings and grounds of the University. Examples include slip, trip, and fall hazards, property defects, fire hazards, and any hazards that could damage property or cause injury to a person. If you observe such a hazard, please report it immediately to Tufts University Police and to the Facilities Department on your campus.
Contract — Contracts typically contain hold harmless, indemnification language, and insurance requirements that may attempt to shift financial risk to the University. Acceptance of terms unfavorable to Tufts may put the University in a financially vulnerable position. Please contact us if you have questions regarding contract language.
Operational — The Tufts community is engaged in diverse activities related to research, education, and administration. It is vital to plan for supervision, training, best practices and emergency planning in order to minimize day-to-day risk. We can help you develop risk management techniques and strategies for your projects and ongoing operations.
Release of Liability — Releases help to reduce the University’s liability by effectively shifting the responsibility for the risk to the participant or third party. Releases should be used for any activity that may be potentially hazardous or when any outside groups use University facilities. Examples include certain physical activities, athletics, and field trips. Please contact us to discuss any activities of this nature so a release can be drafted and signed by participants.
