Effective January 1, 2009, the Tufts milage rate is 55 cents per mile. The rate is based on a pronouncement from the Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department. The rate is intended to cover the cost of operating a personal vehicle for business purposes, and as such, is formulated to take into account the estimated price of gas, automobile insurance and wear-and-tear.
*When using a Tufts owned or rental vehicle the above rates do not apply. you must purchase gas and submit receipts for reimbursement*.
When employees use their personal vehicles on University business, the individual’s personal auto insurance is primary, per Massachusetts law. If the individuals liability coverage limits are exceeded, the University’s insurance acts as excess insurance. It is strongly recommended that you carry limits of at least $100,000/300,000 for bodily injury and property damage if you use your vehicle for business purposes.
Under no circumstances will the University reimburse you for damage to your vehicle.
All insurance questions should be directed to the Office of Risk Management at 627-3981.
